The Story of OX Factor™, the world’s first moodceutical™
XOMD™ coined the word “Moodceutical” to describe their line because it’s the first of its kind — one that quantifiably improves skin, mood and intimacy. They achieved these results thanks to their patent-pending OX Factor, which produces an effect similar to the release of oxytocin.
The Cornerstone: Oxytocin
We all can agree that people in love look better and have a glow to their skin. Studies support a biochemical explanation for looking good when in love. Oxytocin, the "feel-good hormone," is well known to influence pregnancy, mother-child bonding, social interactions, memory and more. Touch between romantic partners stimulates plasma oxytocin levels, influencing trust, fidelity and enjoyment of intimacy.
Science of Skin Health
High levels of oxytocin, a neuropeptide, are associated with youthful-looking skin. They also prevent the release of inflammatory mediators. Aging is a hyperinflammatory state caused, in part, by a reaction to ultraviolet (UV) sun rays, particulate matter from pollution and a high glycemic (sugar) index. By targeting the skin’s natural antioxidant pathways, protection against inflammation can be enforced.
Published studies support that those with high oxytocin levels have a more youthful skin appearance, despite high UV exposure scores, highlighting the protective benefits of oxytocin.
Ultimately, the skin is our visual certificate of health. Radiant, glowing skin promotes social exchange and interaction, working as a positive feedback loop affecting more than just the skin, but also mental health and emotional wellbeing.
The Biology and Chemistry
Oxytocin is primarily released from the hypothalamus in the brain, but it's also released by keratinocyte and fibroblast cells in the epidermis and dermis - the top layers of the skin. These cells are responsible for creating the “building blocks” of the skin: collagen, elastin and internal hyaluronic acid. These cells also express oxytocin receptors. By binding to these receptors, oxytocin can protect keartinocytes and fibroblasts from the ravages of potent inflammatory messengers that inflict skin aging.
